How long does it take to heat a caravan UK: what decides 20 minutes or two hours
Three things settle it: the output your heater actually delivers, the amps the pitch will give you, and how cold the van was when you opened the door. Here is the ladder of reported times, what changes from September to January, and the arrival routine that gets you there.

Quick answer
A caravan on blown air heats in 15 to 20 minutes from a mild start, owners report, and one owner puts a minus-one interior at an hour and a half on gas. Wet heating is slower, and slower again on the fittings. Output decides yours, capped on mains by the pitch amperage. First, though: if anything in the van burns fuel, clear the flue and floor vents before you light it and turn the heating off before you sleep, because blocked flues have killed caravanners.
Three checks in the doorway that decide your number
Ask how long it takes to heat a caravan and you get a range, twenty minutes to an hour, with nothing to say which end is yours. Three things settle it, and all three are checkable from the doorway before you touch a control.
One: what is fitted, and what it puts out
Find the rated output on the appliance badge. That number sets the ceiling, the spread between the common fittings is wide, and it is the biggest thing you can act on tonight. It is not the whole answer: owners are clear that a bigger van takes longer on the same output.
Truma publishes 2000 W and 4000 W gas stages for the Combi 4 E, and 2000, 4000 and 6000 W for the Combi 6 E; both are capped at 900 W and 1800 W in electric mode, drawing 3.9 A and 7.8 A. The older S 5004 gas fire is rated at 6000 W, and the Ultraheat element for S-series fires adds 500, 1000 or 2000 W at 2.2, 4.5 or 8.5 A. Alde publishes 3.3 kW and 5.5 kW on propane for the Compact 3020 HE but no 230 V figure, so we will not state one.
What you brought from home is smaller. The Camping and Caravanning Club lists a domestic fan heater at 1 kW and 4.4 A, a 2 kW one at 8.7 A and a camping fan heater at 750 W. Tube heaters run from 40 W to 240 W, so a 120 W tube is about six per cent of a 2 kW fan heater: frost protection for an empty van, not heating for an occupied one. An oil-filled radiator feels slower than a fan heater of the same wattage because the element warms oil first, though we could not find a manufacturer figure for how much slower.
A correctly installed diesel night heater draws combustion air from outside and vents exhaust outside, so it does not consume or foul the air in the van the way a flueless heater does. That is a design difference rather than a clearance to run it while you sleep, and all of it rests on the installation being right: the exhaust has to be sealed at every joint and terminate clear of any window, roof light or floor vent, and a joint shaken loose on a rough road is not visible from inside.
If you did not fit it and cannot see the exhaust run, treat it as you would any other combustion appliance. nidirect's rule covers it exactly as it covers a gas fire, that a fuel-burning appliance belongs inside only if it is a permanent fixture, installed and maintained correctly; the drifting snow the Club warns about at an underfloor gas flue can sit over a diesel exhaust outlet just as easily; and a CO alarm to EN 50291-2 is not optional with one of these. We could not find a UK authority that publishes a warm-up time for one, so there is none here.
Anything that burns fuel has to put its combustion products somewhere, and the alarm that tells you it has not is a carbon monoxide alarm marked to EN 50291-2, the part of the standard written for leisure vehicles and boats. The flue, vent and overnight detail is below, and it is the section we would least like you to skip.
Two: what the pitch will give you, in amps
This is the constraint almost nobody checks. The Caravan and Motorhome Club says nearly all Club sites supply a maximum 16 amps and that everything running at a pitch has to fit inside it. The Camping and Caravanning Club is blunter: most of its sites give 16A, some are limited to 10A, and Certificated Sites and other campsites can go as low as 5A.
Convert with the Club's own arithmetic, 230 volts times the amps: 6 A is 1,380 W, 10 A is 2,300 W, 16 A is 3,680 W. A Truma Combi's 1800 W stage draws 7.8 A, so a 10 A pitch leaves about 2.2 A for everything else, and on a 6 A pitch that stage is over the limit on its own, leaving only the 900 W one.
Six-amp pitches are not hypothetical. Branscombe Campsite in Devon publishes a hook-up sheet stating that hookups "are designed for light loads and for safety reasons are now restricted to a maximum load of 6 amps only", and the entries it flags as likely to trip the supply include a 2 kW electric heater and a 2 kW domestic kettle.
Two traps sit behind the bollard reading. Even on a 16A hook-up, the Camping and Caravanning Club warns, the sockets inside your van may be protected by a circuit breaker of just 10A. And ordinary domestic kettles can draw 10A or more on their own, which is why the same Club says not to run your heater and kettle together.
The same arithmetic decides whether an electric blanket is worth packing, where the load is small enough that the kettle is the only thing likely to trip you.
Running cost follows the same ladder rather than a separate one: the 1800 W stage is twice the 900 W one, and a 2 kW fan heater sits only a little above it. On a pitch that is not metered the electricity is inside the pitch fee, so the bollard rating is the real constraint. A flued gas heater also sends some of its heat outside, and we could not find a published figure for how much.
Three: how cold it started, and whether the fabric is cold through
Take a thermometer reading before you start, because every reported time below is anchored to one. Five degrees after a mild drive and below zero after three weeks standing are different problems, and the second produces the two-hour stories. Feel the surfaces too: if a locker front and the underside of a mattress are as cold as the air, the shell and furniture are cold through and will keep pulling heat back out.
The one thing you cannot do to shorten it is pre-heat on the road. Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service is flat about that: "Never use a cooker or heater whilst your caravan is moving." Whatever the van reads when you open the door is your starting number.
Insulation grade sits behind this one, and a four-hour figure gets quoted online as though it were a warm-up time. Caravans built to European Standards from September 1998 carry one of three grades, and the Caravan and Motorhome Club describes Grade 2 as heating capable of maintaining 20 degrees C inside when it is 0 outside, Grade 3 as a higher standard for both insulation and heating, "such that the interior can be kept at 20°C when it is -15°C outside". Note the verb: these are about maintaining a temperature, not reaching one.
Motorhomes are graded under a different standard. The Club states the grades "indicate heating classification, not insulation performance", that there is no specific requirement for a motorhome to have insulation at all, and that Grade 3 means 20 degrees C inside at minus 5 outside; the Camping and Caravanning Club agrees. Practical Motorhome dissents, describing the test as a minus 15 chamber with a motorhome driven in, so it is unresolved. Do not read a Grade 3 motorhome badge as the same promise as a Grade 3 caravan badge.
The times owners report, and where yours will land
Nobody runs an independent test of how fast a real caravan warms on a real pitch, so the best evidence available is owners posting on caravan forums. They are not authorities, but they state their starting temperatures, which marketing copy never does.
Blown air, mild start. One owner: "From 5 c to 20 c about 15 to 20 minutes using gas and electric", and the same poster says in another thread that the hot air off a Truma Combi is immediate. A second owner describes about 20 minutes to warm the living area to a reasonably comfortable level.
Wet heating, same start. The first of those owners puts a Bailey with Alde at 30 to 40 minutes, and others are slower still. One expects "at least two hours to get all the fixtures and fittings as well as the air up to a reasonable temperature" from a cold winter start; a forum moderator reports about an hour to reach 21 degrees with the outside around zero. It is not universal: an owner with underfloor pipes as well as radiators was warm before setting up was finished.
A properly cold start. The most useful single report in the set: "On a rally in January, on arrival the caravan temp inside was -1c, it took 1.5 hrs to get up to 20c on gas".
Truma's own figure, read correctly. About 80 minutes for the Combi 4 E and 6 E to heat the appliance and the water container together under EN 15033, and about 23 minutes for the 10-litre container alone from 15 to 60 degrees C. That 80 minutes is not a caravan reaching 20 degrees C.
The laboratory ceiling. Bailey, describing its own Grade 3 chamber testing, says the caravan is soaked overnight at minus 15 degrees C with doors, windows and lockers opened, and that "To pass the Grade 3 test, the habitation area must reach the desired temperature within four hours." That is a European worst case: the coldest month in the Met Office 1991 to 2020 averages, February, sits at about 1.1 degrees C.
So how long it takes to heat a caravan is a ladder, not a number: twenty minutes on your strongest source from a mild start, ninety minutes from a freezing interior on gas, two hours for a wet system to bring the furniture up too.
Carbon monoxide, flues and vents
This is a small enclosed space you sleep in. What follows comes from the two clubs, the LPG industry association, two fire and rescue services, nidirect, the NHS and Electrical Safety First.
The alarm. The Caravan and Motorhome Club says to check it is "marked to standard EN50291-2 (the '-2' indicates suitability for leisure vehicle and boat use)", and Liquid Gas UK, in its guidance for farmers letting caravans as accommodation, recommends detectors Kite marked to BS EN 50291-2, which is the same standard the Club names for touring vans. nidirect adds that these alarms have a limited lifespan, so an old one needs checking or replacing.
If the van has not got one, that is a job for before the next trip rather than during it. Placement is usually given as one alarm in the living area that holds the combustion appliance and a second in any separate sleeping area, sited to its own instructions rather than tucked in a locker or fixed directly above the heater. While you are buying, Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service says "Caravans should be fitted with a smoke detector", and the same Liquid Gas UK sheet asks for smoke alarms Kitemarked to BS EN 14604.
nidirect also lists what carbon monoxide poisoning feels like: headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea and vomiting, exhaustion, drowsiness, lightheadedness, and collapse and loss of consciousness.
Treat the alarm, or any of those symptoms, as a reason to switch the appliance off if you can, get everyone out of the van, and then get medical advice. The NHS says to call 111 if you have symptoms, and 999 or go to A&E if anyone has difficulty breathing, sudden confusion, weakness, chest or muscle pain, or loses consciousness. The trap is that the symptoms ease in fresh air, which feels like the problem solving itself: the NHS tells you not to go back into the affected van until you have had that advice, and the appliance stays off until somebody competent has looked at it.
Watch the people who cannot tell you. A child too young to describe a headache, anyone already unwell, and the dog are the occupants who show it first and report it last, and the test that works on someone who cannot describe how they feel is the NHS one above: symptoms that ease outside and come back when you go in.
The flue, and sleeping. The Club frames this as the safest course rather than an absolute, and it is the most important paragraph on this page: "any form of gas heating should not be left on whilst the caravan occupants are sleeping, for although, in theory, flued heaters with fixed ventilation together with some adjustable ventilation (eg windows) are safe, situations have arisen where an underfloor flue has been blocked by drifting snow or wind-blown rubbish, sometimes with fatal results." That is an October to December failure mode, which is why looking at the flue outlet belongs at the start of the arrival routine.
The vents. Vans built to European Standards from September 1998 have a specified minimum area of fixed ventilation, and the Club leaves no room on it: "No matter how tempting it may be to block these vents, this must never be done. Not only will it increase the risk of condensation, but it could be positively dangerous when gas appliances are in use."
What not to burn. nidirect says "never take a gas stove, light or heater into a tent, caravan or cabin unless it's a permanent fixture, installed and maintained correctly", and never to use a barbecue inside to keep you warm. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service puts it as plainly as it can be put: "You should never use a BBQ to heat up a tent (or any space). They are for cooking, not heating." The hob is out for the same reason: it is a cooker, not a heater.
The version that catches people out is not the one where somebody sets out to heat a van with a barbecue. nidirect's wording is "never take a smouldering or lit barbecue into a tent, caravan or cabin - even if you have finished cooking", and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service explains why: "BBQs give off poisonous carbon monoxide for hours after they are finished cooking." A cooling tray moved out of the rain into the awning is that event.
The awning is not the van. It has no fixed floor vents, no flue and usually no alarm. Liquid Gas UK's code treats patio-style leisure appliances as outdoor equipment: "These appliances are for outdoor use only. The combustion products leaving the heater are extremely hot. On no account shall they be used in an enclosed space, or inside a tent or marquee or close to umbrellas."
Under an awning the code allows them only where the manufacturer's instructions permit it, and the awning must not impede the escape of combustion products. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service adds that you should not rely on a detector out there either: "Don't rely on a carbon monoxide detector to keep you safe in a tent or awning." Heat the van, sit in the van.
Cabinet heaters, precisely. The industry code does not simply ban a flueless portable gas heater indoors, so here is what it does require. Liquid Gas UK's Code of Practice 33 says mobile flueless heaters, widely known as cabinet heaters, "shall only be used with Butane even if their labelling indicates that they are also suitable for Propane", requires an atmosphere sensing device that shuts the gas off as the air becomes vitiated, and requires the label "Use in Well Ventilated Room".
Then the number that decides it: fixed ventilation of not less than 25 square centimetres per kilowatt of heat input, and "The heat input of any flueless appliances shall not exceed 50 watts/m3 free room space." Section 12 of that code is written for construction site huts, cabins and worker caravans rather than touring vans, so read it as the closest applicable industry rule.
Its ventilation clause opens with a sentence worth reading twice, that "Inadequate ventilation of site huts and caravans has contributed to the death of many persons." Assume, and this is an assumption rather than a measurement, that a small two-berth interior offers something like 15 cubic metres of free space: at 50 watts per cubic metre that allows around 750 W of flueless input in total, a fraction of a cabinet heater built for a living room.
Portable electric heaters. Electrical Safety First's guidance is written for homes and sits awkwardly in a caravan, which is worth saying rather than glossing over: it asks for at least one metre between the heater and combustibles such as paper, furniture or curtains, which in a caravan lounge is a real constraint. Two instructions carry across without argument: "Never leave your heater unattended while in use or while you are asleep." and "It is recommended not to use a portable heater overnight." A third says to "Avoid powering a heater from an extension lead as they can easily be overloaded." Note the word, avoid rather than never, and note it means a household extension lead from a socket, not the site supply cable feeding the van's inlet.
One more from the same guidance is the one October to January makes tempting: "Never dry clothes directly on or close to your heater." Where there is a flame the LPG industry code is stronger still, saying of drying clothes that "Open flame heaters and cooker burners shall never be used for this purpose." In a van with one door and a metre of gangway that is the fire risk rather than a theoretical one.
What changes from September to January
The figures below are Met Office data: UK mean daily minimum air temperature from the HadUK-Grid series, averaged over 1991 to 2020. They are averages of nightly lows across the whole country, so an individual night on your pitch can be far colder, and a UK-wide mean hides a wide regional spread. Use them for the shape of the season and take the real number off the local forecast.
September, 9.0 degrees C
Nothing yet, in heating terms: the van is rarely cold through this early, and the five most recent Septembers ran from 8.8 to 11.0 degrees C. This is the month for the jobs that matter later, while it is still pleasant to do them. Check the flue outlet is clear, check no floor vent is blocked by a stored awning, test the carbon monoxide alarm.
Add one more if the van has not run since spring: a gas and habitation check. Liquid Gas UK's requirement for caravans provided as accommodation is a check by a Gas Safe registered installer with the appropriate LPG competences, repeated every 12 months. That is written for caravans let as accommodation rather than for a private owner touring their own van, so treat twelve months as the interval the trade works to rather than as a legal deadline. It belongs in September because the first light of the season is when a summer's worth of debris in a burner or flue announces itself, and the outside of the flue outlet is not where you can see it.
October, 6.4 degrees C
Two things change at once. The average overnight low drops by more than two degrees from September, and the clocks go back on 25 October 2026, so from that Sunday you are pitching in the dark, which makes the flue and vent check easier to skip. The five most recent Octobers all ran above the 1991 to 2020 average, between 7.2 and 8.3 degrees C, so treat 6.4 as a floor rather than a forecast. Vans standing since summer also face their first cold-through warm-up, which reads much slower than the same van in July.
November, 3.6 degrees C
The overnight low has roughly halved since September, which is why this question gets urgent now. A van standing a few weeks starts cold in its fabric, and the wet-system owners describing two hours for the fittings are usually describing conditions like these. Recent Novembers ranged from 3.4 to 5.5 degrees C, so plan for the long end of the ladder.
December, 1.4 degrees C
Now the water system joins the heating question. The Club describes a Grade 3 caravan as one whose water system can be filled and will operate at minus 15 outside, and a Grade 2 van carries no such promise, so read your handbook on the plumbing before a hard frost rather than during one. This is also the month the snow-blocked flue warning is written for.
January, 1.2 degrees C
The coldest arrivals, and the month that minus-one interior report came from; January 2026 came in at 0.8 degrees C, below the 30-year figure. Heating from below zero, an hour and a half on gas to reach 20 degrees C is a reasonable expectation rather than a fault, and a low-wattage tube heater on a frost stat is the one heater meant to run unattended, mounted as its instructions require and clear of cushions, bedding and curtains. That is frost protection for a system you could not fully drain rather than a damp measure, and our damp guide argues for draining down and a dehumidifier instead.
The arrival routine, in order
Order matters. One of these steps is a safety check that has to happen before anything is lit, and another stops being possible once you have unpacked.
The routine is written for a fitted, flued appliance: gas blown air, a wet system, or a correctly installed diesel unit. If your heat source is a portable cabinet heater or a fan heater from home, read the ventilation limits in the carbon monoxide section first, because steps 3 and 7 change for you.
1. Walk round the outside first. Look at the heater flue outlet and the fixed floor vents, and clear leaves, mud, drifted snow and whatever the last occupant of the pitch left behind. This is the check the Club's flue warning is about and it takes under a minute.
2. Connect the mains, if that is your route to heat. On a hook-up pitch the supply cable is the whole route, and if it will not reach the bollard you have no mains heating tonight. The Caravan and Motorhome Club sets the cable at 25 metres maximum, plus or minus two metres, on three cores of 2.5mm² each, and states that joiners and splitters are not permitted on Club sites, so a short lead cannot be extended with a second one. The Camping and Caravanning Club recommends the same length and adds that "you should still uncoil the full length of your cable, to avoid it overheating in use".
If your lead is a 15 or 20 metre one and the bollards on your sites are shared between four or six pitches, the lead is what decides whether the electric side works at all, and it has to be one continuous run. Buy on the gauge as well as the length: the Club's specification is three-core cable with each core at 2.5mm², and heating is the load that sits near the pitch limit for hours rather than minutes. Plenty of leads sold for caravan use are thinner than that, which is the whole argument in our review of a popular 25 metre hook-up lead, so check the conductor size before you buy rather than the words on the packaging.
3. Start the heating before you unpack, at the highest setting the pitch allows. On gas that is the top stage; on a 6 A pitch it is the 900 W stage on a Truma Combi rather than the 1800 W one. If the van is dual fuel, run both: Practical Motorhome's advice is that "For heating with dual-fuel boilers, using your gas to boost the heat output is an effective way to manage this."
Both it and the Caravan and Motorhome Club suggest limiting blown air heating and air conditioning to 500W on hook-up. The Club frames that as a request to keep electricity use down when the site is busy rather than as a cap on your pitch, so on gas or dual fuel it costs you nothing to follow, and on electric only it is a real trade-off against warm-up time. Wet coats and boots go somewhere other than the heater while it runs, for the reason Electrical Safety First gives above.
4. Look at the flame as it settles. On gas, the Club names "lazy yellow/orange flames instead of crisp blue ones or sooty black marks" as the signs that something is wrong with the combustion. A lazy yellow flame is incomplete combustion, and incomplete combustion is what makes carbon monoxide, so turn the appliance off, open up and ventilate the van, and leave it off until a Gas Safe registered engineer with LPG competence has been through it.
5. Leave the kettle alone for the first ten minutes. The Camping and Caravanning Club says heaters should be low powered and ideally designed for camp life, and not to run heater and kettle together. That pairing is the one that most often exceeds the pitch.
6. Set the water heater once the air is moving. Asking one burner to heat the van and the water container at the same time is asking it to do two jobs, and the water is the one that can wait.
7. Open something small rather than sealing everything. The fixed vents stay clear regardless, and the Club's ventilation list includes leaving roof lights ajar and increasing ventilation in wet or humid weather. A roof light on its first catch costs very little warm-up time.
8. Judge it against the ladder, not against five minutes. Blown air should feel different within a few minutes and comfortable in fifteen to twenty from a mild start; a wet system will not, and that is normal.
9. Turn the heating off before you sleep, not down. The Caravan and Motorhome Club's position, quoted in full above, is that no form of gas heating should be left on while the occupants are sleeping, and Electrical Safety First asks the same of a portable heater. Warm the van while you are awake, then let the bedding do the rest of the work. The condensation advice points the same way for a lesser reason, since the Club's list includes not having the caravan too warm inside at night.
What goes wrong, and what to do about it
You trip the bollard
Almost always the heater plus something else, and almost always in the first half hour. The Caravan and Motorhome Club describes what happens next: a circuit breaker disconnects your supply, and site staff can reconnect you. The Camping and Caravanning Club adds that in some cases you will have cut the electricity to your neighbours' pitches too. Branscombe's sheet warns against resetting it yourself, adding that "If the loss of supply is because you have overloaded the circuit or misused equipment there may be a charge for restoring your supply or the supply may be withdrawn."
Whatever else happens, switch the heater off at the appliance and unplug whatever tripped it before the supply comes back, or it trips again the moment it does. And if a bollard keeps tripping after you have dropped the load, that is a fault to report rather than something to keep resetting.
The fast warm-up mists your windows
Warming a cold van quickly has one sourced side effect, and it is a window one. The Caravan and Motorhome Club, quoting Dometic on double-glazed acrylic windows, says moisture between the panes "can occur if it is cool outside, the air inside is moist and the inside of the caravan becomes warm very quickly. In this case condensation can form between the panes, as the temperatures and humidity do not have time to balance."
A separate mechanism, nothing to do with speed, is that the Club notes flueless gas heaters greatly increase the likelihood of condensation, one of the main by-products of burning gas being water.
Owners argue about heat and damp most for vans left standing between trips, where nobody is inside adding moisture. For the van you are about to occupy, the Club's own wording is that flued space heating systems "are obviously the best bet for continuous use in winter", while its condensation advice asks for "increasing the ventilation in wet or humid weather" and for "not having the caravan too warm inside at night". Neither of those changes the instruction in step 9: the heat goes off before you sleep. You misjudge how long a bottle lasts
Cold-weekend gas use is far higher than summer use, because the burner sits near its top stage instead of ticking over. A 13 kg propane bottle holds 13,000 grams, an Alde Compact 3020 HE burns 405 grams an hour at its higher output and a Truma S 5004 up to 480 grams flat out: roughly 32 and 27 hours of continuous full-output running from one bottle. Those are ceilings rather than planning numbers, because a real heater cycles instead of running flat out, and we could not find a duty-cycled consumption figure from either manufacturer.
What catches people out is that the same bottle is usually feeding the cooker, the water heater and often the fridge as well, so a cold weekend draws all of them down at once. So carry the spare in winter, or fit a changeover regulator so the second bottle picks up without you going out in the dark. Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service says gas cylinders should be kept outside the caravan, and a bottle change is a heater-off job rather than one to do by torchlight with the fire lit.
You expect the wrong thing from the wrong appliance
A portable power station is not a heating solution: our review of the GRECELL T-500 portable power station puts it at 500 W continuous and 519 Wh, and the lowest electric stage on a Truma Combi is 900 W, so it will not run one. Even setting that limit aside, 519 Wh at 900 W is under 35 minutes.
It is 11pm and the van is still cold
If the heating is not coping, the pitch supply is small, the van has no fitted heating or the gas has gone, the answer is to stop trying to heat the air and start insulating the people. Warm the van as far as it will go while you are awake, then turn the heat off and let bedding carry the night.
That means a bag or duvet rated below the overnight low; a mat or topper under you, because a cold bed base takes more heat out of you than cold air does; a hot water bottle; and a blanket sold for caravan or campervan hook-up if there is a bollard, which is not the same product as the domestic one off the spare bed. The van never quite gets there
If an hour has passed and the air is warm but the room still feels cold, the fabric is the likely answer rather than the appliance. If the air itself is not warming, work back through the three checks.

Gas, usually, because it delivers more heat. Truma's Combi 4 E runs 2000 W and 4000 W gas stages against 900 W and 1800 W in electric mode, and that 1800 W stage draws more than a 6 A pitch can give, which is why the dual-fuel advice is to let gas do the lifting.
Can you heat a caravan without electric hook-up?
Yes, if the heating runs on gas, which is how most caravan blown-air and wet systems are designed to work away from a bollard. A portable power station is not a substitute: at 500 W continuous it sits below the Truma Combi's lowest electric step, so it will not run one at all.
Should you leave caravan heating on overnight?
No. The Caravan and Motorhome Club's position is that gas heating should not be left on while the occupants are sleeping, because an underfloor flue blocked by drifting snow or wind-blown rubbish has caused deaths, and Electrical Safety First says never to leave a portable heater on while you are asleep. Warm the van before bed, then turn it off and rely on bedding instead.
